About this tool

Roman numerals use seven letters — I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1000) — combined by addition and subtraction to represent numbers. A smaller numeral placed before a larger one subtracts (IV = 4, IX = 9), while one placed after adds (VI = 6, XI = 11). This tool converts standard Arabic numbers to Roman numerals and back, supporting the conventional range of 1 to 3999 — the largest value cleanly expressible without extended notation. You'll still spot Roman numerals today on clock faces, movie copyright years, book chapter numbers, and monarch or Super Bowl numbering (like Queen Elizabeth II or Super Bowl LVIII).
